First-ever Eton Love Story Causes Media Stir

Posted at 4:32PM Wednesday 24 Oct 2007

The Well-Tempered Clavier, a tempestuous and passionate debut novel by journalist William Coles, is causing media speculation as to which high-profile ex-Etonian's true-story it might be based on.

The novel is released this week, on 27th October, and is the next title in independent publisher Legend Press' rapidly growing novel list. The book's launch will be celebrated in central London at Foyles on Charing Cross Road with numerous key media names expected to attend.

In the book, Coles tells the story of a torrid, intensely-emotional love affair which develops between 17-year-old schoolboy Kim and his 23-year-old female piano teacher, the beguiling but pained India. 25-years later, Kim looks back on the life-changing experience and sees how enemies, strict constraints and ultimately his own jealousy destroyed the haven that had been created. On finally uncovering the reason for India's secret hurt, the novel reaches a destructive finale that still haunts Kim all these years later, as does the music that she taught him to love, Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier.

The Sun's 'Whip' columnist featured the book last week and led its readers to wonder whether any of the author's high-profile Eton peers (which include MP Boris Johnson, Princess Diana's brother Earl Spencer and Conservative Party leader David Cameron) might have been the pupil that Coles' 17-year-old-hero Kim is based on.

Coles said: 'I only began to appreciate when I was halfway through the novel just how weird Britain's single-sex schools are. Eton College in particular. To have over 1,000 boys in this cloistered environment, and not a girl in sight; it's strange. When you're in the middle of it, you just accept that it's the norm. Only years later do you realise that the whole place is quite extraordinary.

He continued: 'My publisher and everyone who's read it so far has wanted to know who's story it is, or if indeed it might actually be my own story. Suffice to say it's not mine, but it is most definitely true – I was told it by a friend about 15 years ago and have been mulching on it ever since.'
