Elegant, Honourable And Principled

Posted at 7:18PM Thursday 13 Mar 2008

It was Superwoman that brought Jane and me together.

In 1976 Shirley Conran was writing the follow-up volume to her bestseller, and was flying into Heathrow. Jane, who worked for Shirley's agent, Patrick Seale, was dispatched with currency, while I, as her editor at Sidgwick & Jackson, had responsibility for a set of paper underwear - heaven knows why. The plane was late, Shirley lost both her baggage and her temper, but Jane and I had fortified ourselves with Bloody Marys, and returned to Central London in a happy haze. Our friendship was forged.
