Wiley Travel Unveils Tool To Revolutionise The Art Of Travel Planning

Posted at 8:14AM Friday 28 Mar 2008

Whatsonwhen, a leading web services and events information provider, and Frommer's, the publisher of the best selling travel guidebooks, have created a unique 'trip recommender' which could revolutionise the way customers and travel companies research and book trips.

The companies, who form Wiley Travel – the travel publishing arm of worldwide Wiley Publishing – developed the tool for Borders bookstores in the United States. Special travel kiosks in select Borders locations will include the trip recommender, an extensive calendar of festivals and parties happening worldwide, and a 'popular destination' feature that gives customers access to Frommer's data on more than 100 destinations.

"This 'trip recommender' has huge potential for the UK travel industry," said Joel Brandon-Bravo, director of Whatsonwhen. "Many companies tell us they find it difficult to segment their products to lead customers to the right holiday/flight/accommodation. This is a swifter, more intuitive version than anything else on the market. Our new head of business development Giles Longhurst is already demonstrating this new tool to UK travel companies."

The 'trip recommender' enables customers to enter information about the type of trip they would like to take and provides customised destination recommendations. To delve deeper into the details about a destination, customers can also access an extensive calendar of activities, including festivals, concerts and sporting events. For customers who want to narrow their search to the world's most sought-after destinations, there's a feature on the Border's kiosk that provides access to accurate and candid Frommer's data on more than 100 international destinations simply by choosing the location on a world map, or by selecting a region, city or country from a series of pull down menus.

Bespoke content can always be added to a website that uses this functionality. For example, at the Borders kiosks, there are also seasonal articles penned by Pauline Frommer exclusively for Borders customers. After they've completed their research, customers can even book their trip online right at the kiosk.

"This is designed to provide unprecedented in-store access to a variety of travel planning tools and resources as well as expert recommendations on destination-specific books and related travel accessories – so customers can research and plan the best trip possible," says Larry Olson, vice president and director of marketing for Wiley. "We're thrilled to offer such dynamic and forward-thinking travel planning tools that make the trip planning experience exceptionally smooth and easy."
