Expert books celebrates its first 50 years of publishing
and the first 50 million copies sold.
On Wednesday 21st May, Transworld Publishers hosted a party at The Royal Festival Hall to celebrate the first 50 years of Expert books and the first 50 million Experts sold, and to congratulate their creator Dr D.G. Hessayon.
In a rare public appearance Dr Hessayon was joined by his family and friends. The distinguished guests included the Rt Hon Lord & Lady Tebbit, the Rt Hon Earl Ferrers, Brigadier Andrew Parker-Bowles and his wife, and favourite Transworld authors such as Joanna Trollope, Judy Astley and Tom Hart-Dyke.
Larry Finlay, Managing Director of Transworld Publishers, paid tribute to Dr Hessayon for creating such a unique series which has had an unparalleled influence on gardening over the past 50 years.
He also talked about the future of the Experts and an exciting new venture. 2009 will see the start of a whole new series of non-gardening Experts, for which Dr Hessayon will act as the Editorial and Design consultant.
"Next year my new role will be the same as the old cat on the tiles," said Dr Hessayon. "Not doing it myself any more but I'm there to tell the young ones where things ought to go."
Another 50 years and another 50 million Experts: is the idea so preposterous? When the very first Expert, Be Your Own Gardening Expert – a 32 page staple-bound guide filled with pictures and charts for ordinary non-gardeners - first appeared at the garden centres, no one dreamt that 2008 would mark such an extraordinary milestone. Today more than one in every two households has or has had an Expert book, making them the bestselling gardening books and Dr Hessayon one of the world's all time bestselling non-fiction authors.
