The Lost Diaries Of Adrian Mole, 1999-2001 By Sue Townsend

Posted at 11:21AM Tuesday 30 Dec 2008

The Lost Diaries of Adrian Mole, 1999-2001
ISBN: 9780718154899

This "lost" set of diaries is actually a republished series of newspaper columns, and covers Mole's life in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire in 1999-2001. As it's a prequel to The Wilderness Years, the timing is odd, but those who have grown old(er) with Adrian will want to keep up with all his ramblings.

In 1999 Adrian is an unemployed single father of two boys, living in middle England at its most middle-aged and dull. And there's plenty here to enjoy in the tales of daily struggles in Blairite Britain. Townsend mixes a broad satirical theme with her keen eye for the annoyances of modern life: "The Nativity play started 15 minutes late because one of the parents ... tried to smuggle a video camera into the assembly hall."
