Borders UK Celebrates The Best Of American Literature With Its Own Election

Posted at 8:24AM Monday 12 Jan 2009

Borders UK has announced today that it has launched a big campaign in its stores called 'Once Upon a Time in America'. With the eyes of the world turned to the USA with Barack Obama's presidential inauguration on January 20, Borders is celebrating the best of American literature, culture and politics in a promotion that runs across Books, Music and DVD.

The books featured reflect the history and culture of America, from the early frontier nation to the present day. The list includes novels that showcase the best of American fiction – classics such as Hunter S Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye and Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence. There are non-fiction titles too, books that shed light on events that have shaped a nation, such as autobiographies/biographies of JFK, Malcolm X, Nixon and Kissinger, alongside seminal works like The Great Crash: 1929 by JK Galbraith and Jarhead by Anthony Swafford. Modern classics such a Jonathan Frantzen's The Corrections and David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest complete the range.

Borders is also having its own election, inviting visitors to www.borders.co.uk to vote online for their favourite work of American literature. In addition there is a discussion room where voters can rally support for their choice or maybe even disagree with others.. Voting closes on February 19th, with the winner announced on February 20th, so cast your vote now before someone else steals your choice!
