Posted at 8:17AM Tuesday 24 Mar 2009
Waterstone's and Film4 announced today an exciting new partnership that will bring the best films inspired by the greatest books to viewers and readers alike. Beginning Friday 10 April, Film4 will showcase a selection of award-winning films that have been adapted from books, including the Oscar-winning L.A. Confidential (from the novel by James Ellroy), The Devil Wears Prada (by Lauren Weisberger), Trainspotting (by Irvine Welsh), And When Did You Last See Your Father? (by Blake Morrison), Brick Lane (by Monica Ali), and The Motorcycle Diaries (by Ernesto Guevara). The books will also feature in Waterstone's stores, allowing fans of the films to discover the original stories behind them. Waterstone's and Film4 will launch the Great Adaptations Season with a special panel discussion devoted to the subject at Waterstone's flagship store in Piccadilly on 1 April. Members of the panel will include Simon Beaufoy, who recently won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Slumdog Millionaire, director Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane), Katherine Butler, head of development at Film4, and author Julie Myerson, whose book The Story of You Film4 is currently developing into a feature. Toby Bourne, head of fiction at Waterstone's, said, 'There has long been a love affair between books and film, resulting in some truly amazing productions. Equally amazing, however, are the writing and vision that first created these incredible stories. The Great Adaptations Season is a fantastic way to bring these wonderful books to a new audience.' Tessa Ross, Controller, Film & Drama, at Channel 4, said, 'We are delighted to be supporting the Film4/Waterstones Great Adaptations season. We have had great success of late with adapting literary works, both through Film4 (Slumdog Millionaire), and Drama (Red Riding). It is wonderful to have the opportunity to take great contemporary fiction and pair it with our brilliant British screenwriters and directors, whose understanding of both film and the spirit of the novelist's work brings out the very best of both mediums on the big screen.' Tickets for the event are free and available from customer services at Waterstone's Piccadilly. Please contact the branch on 0207 851 2400.
