Winning the Bill Fisher Award for Best First Book—Children's/Young Adult is ASL Tales: The Princess and the Pea. This Portland, OR independent publisher, www.ASLTales.net, has created a new kind of children's picture book. The stories, told in American Sign Language and English, not only stand alone as beautifully illustrated children's literature, they also serve as robust learning tools. The richly illustrated books/DVDs, with voice translation in eight languages, comes with interactive web tools designed with special applications for hearing children, Deaf children, reluctant readers, children with language development challenges, and children learning English as a second language. The books, performed by world-class ASL storytellers, introduce ASL structure, vocabulary and Deaf Culture.

Stonewiser: The Heart of the Stone, by Dora Machado, and Mermaid Press, located in Spring Hill, FL took home The Bill Fisher Award for Best First Book—Fiction. Review from Barnes and Noble says; once in a while, a new fantasy/adventure comes out that doesn't travel well-worn paths in the genre but instead gives us a vivid new world, an exciting set of original characters, and page after page of non-stop intrigue, action, twists, revelation, and fun. Stonewiser is the best to appear in years. – Barnes & Noble review
