Press Release: Miscellaneous Announcements
Borders UK Launches New E-Reader

Posted at 5:26PM Tuesday 30 Jun 2009

Borders UK announced today that it has teamed up with Elonex to market a new e-reader which is now available to buy in all Borders stores and from www.borders.co.uk The e-reader, called the Elonex ebook, has been specially developed for Borders UK and will retail at £189, taking on the Sony Reader (which typically costs at least £199) head-to-head.

The Elonex ebook comes with enough internal memory to download up to 1,000 eBooks immediately (the Sony Reader's initial capacity is only 160 eBooks) and comes with 100 classic titles already pre-loaded to get you started. Also available is an accessory pack which contains a 4GB SD card, allowing storage for approximately 8,000 more titles, and a leather case, available together for £29.99. Super slim in design, and lighter than the Sony Reader at only 180g, it supports both ePub and Adobe formats and is therefore completely compatible with the Borders website where there are currently more than 45,000 e-books available.

Announcing the launch of the new e-reader at Borders, Commercial Director at Borders UK Peter Newbould said: "Digital bookselling is still in its infancy, but we believe it is here to stay. We were first to market with an e-book reader when we introduced the iRex Iliad last year and by launching the Elonex e-book at a retail price of £189, making it available in all of our UK stores and ensuring it is easy to shop the 45,000 titles at www.borders.co.uk, we hope to bring new customers into the market."

You can view e-books either landscape or portrait, read text in seven different languages, bookmark your place in the e-book, and magnify the text for easy reading. With its near 180° viewing angle and anti-glare facility the reader will no longer experience eye strain when reading, and you can even use it in direct sunlight. In addition, its revolutionary low power design means that you can read up to 8,000 pages between charges, in comparison to the Sony Reader which only allows less than 7,000 page turns before it needs recharging.

The launch of the Elonex ebook will be supported in all Borders stores by point of sale.
