Press Release: Moves and Promotions
James Gurbutt To Start Up New Imprint At Constable & Robinson

Posted at 1:41PM Friday 03 Jul 2009

James Gurbutt, former Associate Publisher of Harvill Secker, will be joining Constable & Robinson to head up a new imprint. The focus of the new list, which will be named in the autumn, will be literary and commercial fiction. Nick Robinson said 'James' appointment is a part of C&R's strategy to build on the success of our crime fiction list by broadening the fiction areas in which we publish.  Last year was strong and so was the first quarter of this year.  I feel this is a good environment for independent publishers. It will be fun working with James and I'm really looking forward to it.' Robinson added that further announcements were anticipated.

James Gurbutt said 'I am delighted and can't wait to start working with Nick and his enthusiastic and creative team. These are challenging times in some ways but also exciting.'  Gurbutt left Random House in March where acquisitions included the 2009 Orange Shortlisted writer Samantha Hunt and Somerset Maugham winner James Scudamore.

At Rogers Coleridge and White, Peter Straus said 'I have always found James Gurbutt to be a talented energetic and highly dedicated publisher.' David Miller added.  'It's terrific to see James back at a desk so soon, with the potential to create a list that might one day rival the one he had to leave behind.'

Gillon Aitken of Aitken Alexander Associates comments: 'A very good move by Constable and Robinson, and I am delighted for James, whose editorial skills have become an increasingly rare commodity in today's publishing world.'

Constable & Co was founded in 1795 by Archibald Constable and has published, amongst others: George Bernard Shaw, Henry James, Theodore Dreiser, Jean Rhys and Patrick Hamilton. Constable & Robinson is one of the oldest independent publishing houses in the English-speaking world still trading under the name of its founder.

Gurbutt will start full time in September.
