Press Release: Prizes and Awards
Julia Donaldson Wins Inclusive Book Category At The NASEN Awards

Posted at 12:30PM Tuesday 27 Oct 2009

Julia Donaldson's debut teenage novel Running on the Cracks (published by Egmont Press) was announced winner of the 'Inclusive Children's Book' category at the nasen awards last week. The annual awards celebrate the most inclusive and innovative books, games and DVDs available in the field of special educational needs.

Running on the Cracks follows the journey of runaway orphan Leo, and her quest to discover her father's side of the family. Along the way Leo meets and is helped by an array of characters; 12-year-old Finlay, who can never get anything right and is always in trouble, Rab, the grumpy cornershop owner, Marina the no-nonsense doughnut lady and Mary the manic depressive who provides a valuable hideaway.

Receiving her prize from former Children's Laureate and award winning author Anne Fine, Julia said:

"I didn't set out to preach my point of view but I have always been passionate about the importance of the wider community understanding and recognising the various disorders and needs that people may experience."
