Wanted - Time To ThinkPosted at 5:36PM Tuesday 08 Dec 2009 Stating the obvious, publishing has had a turbulent year. So many elements of what we do are in flux, there are so many things we have no control over, and so many things we need to wrestle and solve quickly as the next issue tumbles in behind. Have we reduced the value of a book to just price? (Paco Underhill: "if you only use price you are nothing but an order taker.") Have we been seduced by celebrity memoirs and forgotten that they are not books but merchandise sold to people who see them in the same light as hats, caps and T-shirts - publishing's equivalent of derivatives? Have we forgotten that our future lies in selling books to people who like books?
