Mike McLennanPosted at 10:51PM Wednesday 13 Jan 2010 Mike McLennan died on New Years' Eve 2009, after fighting a brave battle against lung cancer, he was 69 years old. To the end of his life he maintained a belief that whilst the disease would eventually win, it would not defeat him. During the year of his treatment he continued to exercise his considerable intellectual powers by reading, discussion and argument, and by continuing to travel as widely as his condition allowed in order to expand his mind.Mike, who was educated at Tiffin School, and Magdalene College, Oxford, spent the great majority of his working life in publishing, generally in a sales capacity but also in administration. His first publisher was Longman's, then a spell with Cambridge University Press before finally arriving at Faber and Faber where he worked with Sales Director Peter Crawley concentrating on export sales. He brought to Faber a wealth of export experience gained by travelling extensively overseas and he was responsible for ensuring Faber's export sales developed during his time there. Working closely with Crawley's successors both Tony Pocock and George Taylor, Mike helped set up and oversaw the development of a separate Faber office in the U.S. On leaving Faber, Mike has a series of non-publishing jobs before retiring in 1995. To all who knew and worked with him, Mike represented all that was good about publishing in a period when to some it was still a "profession for gentlemen". He was totally honest, always scrupulously fair in all his dealings with customers and never without the sense of humour that never deserted him. Mike had the ability to consider all the options and all the angles and was never at a loss to offer his help and advice to others when required. Mike always saw the best in people and will be missed by his considerable number of friends, and his family, his wife Joyce and his sons Gareth and Matthew.
