There was a story in the New York Times last week which revealed that more than half the "bestselling" e-books on Kindle, Amazon.com's e-reader, are available at no charge. And though some of these American titles are digital versions of out-of-copyright classics, such as Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, many are by new authors trying to make it in writing.
