Author Brings History To Life At Colchester Arts Centre

2PM FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY BEST-SELLING ROMAN MYSTERIES AUTHOR DONATES EVENT TO APPEAL TO SAVE BRITAIN'S ONLY KNOWN ROMAN CHARIOT HORSE RACING CIRCUS FOUND IN COLCHESTER The author of the best-selling children's 'Roman Mysteries' books - Caroline Lawrence - is bringing her stories to Colchester this month with a multimedia show and the participation of young TV actress and Colchester resident Millie Binks. Millie played the character of Pulchra in the BBC TV adaptation of the 'Roman Mysteries' series. Caroline has devised a special presentation about a day at a Roman Circus. In this exciting, illustrated talk she will describe the sights, sounds and emotions of a day of chariot racing. This is a special event Caroline has never given before, and is tailor-made for the Colchester Roman Circus Appeal to save the site from developers of 8 Starting Gates to the Roman Circus for the public access and to build a visitors centre. www.romancircus.org Everyone attending the half-term show - at the Colchester Arts Centre at 2pm on Friday 19 February will receive a free signed copy of one of Caroline's hugely popular books. After the show they will be able to meet Caroline and Millie and get their book* signed. *N.B. choice of title on first come, first served basis Bill Hayton, coordinator of the Colchester Roman Circus Appeal said, "It's fantastic that Caroline is coming to Colchester. She is giving her time for free and has worked really hard to design a special talk for the Circus Appeal. We're very grateful to the Arts Centre as well - they're giving us tremendous help. We hope that parents and children will join us this half-term and help raise crucial funds for the Appeal. We're getting closer and closer to our target every day." Caroline says of her involvement in the appeal, "When I heard that the UK's only known Roman Chariot Racecourse (or 'Circus') was under threat, I immediately asked what I could do to help raise money to save it. Colchester's Circus is a real national treasure and well worth saving for the thousands of schoolchildren (and their parents) who love learning about Britain's Roman Heritage. One of the delights of writing the Roman Mysteries is the research I do, delving into the world of ancient Rome. One thing I have come to realise is that many Roman institutions have modern equivalents. But the one aspect of Roman life we simply cannot replicate is a day at the races. I'll be telling why it was so unique at a charity event in Colchester on Friday 19 February. On hand to help me will be the beautiful Millie Binks, who plays the character of Pulchra in the BBC TV adaptation of my books. She'll be answering questions about what it was like to be in Ancient Rome. Everyone who attends this talk will receive a free Roman Mystery signed by me and Millie.
