Posted at 12:43PM Thursday 11 Mar 2010
Random House Children's Books is partnering up with National Drama, the UK's leading drama organisation, to launch a competition designed to engage young people in books and theatre based on Theresa Breslin's new novel, Prisoner of the Inquisition. The competition, which launches today, challenges secondary school pupils to act out the opening scene from the book, then film their performance, post it to a website and stand the chance to win £1000 of books and an event with Theresa Breslin. The competition will be promoted via National Drama's website, networks and facebook site and RHCB will spread the word to school librarians and Breslin's existing fans. The competition is designed to appeal to teachers, not only of drama, but in other disciplines, as it involves many cross-curricular areas such as English, Drama, ICT and citizenship. Kate Fleming, vice chair of National Drama says: "We're thrilled to launch the Page to Stage competition – it's very innovative in the way we're going to judge the entries via videos on You Tube and there's a cracking prize too. We hope our members will see this as an engaging classroom project and that there will be a strong take up." The competition will close in early June when the winning school will be notified. The judges will be looking for creative interpretations of the opening scene and will take in to account scripting, casting, direction, set design, costumes and more. Award-winning author and former librarian, Theresa Breslin, comments: "Young people have such an interest in drama and a terrific grasp of modern technology so the film clips are bound to be fascinating. I can't wait to view them."
