Authors need to help themselves - but can best do so when they are part of a collaboration of equals, suggests Trevor Dolby

What this very impressive litany reminds us is just how much the success of a book is dependent upon the ceaseless hard work and self-promotion of the author. More than any other aspect of the book business, this is what constantly surprises outsiders: it's all on the author.
