First UK Business Book Festival Announced
Posted at 7:14AM Friday 30 Jul 2010
Storytelling from EntrepreneursOn Friday 10 September, Bournemouth will host the UK's first business book festival. The sparkling seven-storey Executive Business Centre, just minutes walk from the station, will be the centre of a day of seminars, talks and speeches about how to step out of the world of conventional work and do your own thing. The festival is the brainchild of Robert Ashton, author of nine business books, and speechwriter Brian Jenner. Robert Ashton said: "Business books by British authors sell all over the world. Entrepreneurs on every continent find inspiration, ideas and practical tips from the books we write here in the UK. It's about time we recognised and celebrated what the huge contribution this genre makes to global prosperity." Brian Jenner, an entrepreneur based in Bournemouth, said: "Lots of people are feeling very anxious in their jobs, especially in the public sector. We want to encourage people to view this insecurity as an opportunity rather than something to be afraid of. Running your own business isn't easy, but the pressure to make it work certainly gets you leaping out of bed in the morning. We want people to come along and get a true impression of how rewarding doing your own thing can be. "We got the idea from the fringe of the Party Political Conferences, which are held regularly in Bournemouth. You can circulate dozens of events in the town and at each one you pick up ideas and get insights into different problems. We're doing that for entrepreneurs – you'll be able to choose whether you listen to a man who set up his own airline or a woman who started up her own café. There will be talks on public speaking, marketing and using social media. We will also be running seminars on how to publish your own business book, as well as a chance to speak to authors and meet the publishers." The festival has signed up Rachel Elnaugh, one of the original Dragons, Geoff Burch, star of BBC's Over the Shop, Max Atkinson, author of Lend Me Your Ears, David Craig, author of Rip off, The Scandalous Story of the Consulting Money Machine, Brad Burton, author of Get off Your Arse, Graham Davies, author of Bare Knuckle Brilliance for Every Presenter, and Guy Clapperton, author of This is Social Media, with many more still to come.... Individual events are £10 each on the day, or you can get a pass for the whole day for £40 +vat between 1st – 31st August (which includes a £10 book voucher to spend at the festival).
