Granta To Publish Controversial 1949 Novella

Posted at 11:08AM Friday 27 Aug 2010

Granta Books are to publish S.Yizhar's controversial 1949 novella, KHIRBET KHIZEH, about the violent expulsion of Palestinian villagers by the Israeli army. The book, considered a modern Hebrew masterpiece, has given rise to fierce controversy over the years. Published just months after the end of the 1948 war, KHIRBET KHIZEH was an immediate sensation when it first appeared. Thousands of Israeli Jews rushed to read it, the critics began to argue about it, and a Palestinian journalist in Nablus described it as a sign that the Israeli army had a conscience and that peace was possible.

Commissioning Editor, Michal Shavit, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Ibis Editions, a not-for-profit press based in Jerusalem. Granta will publish in February 2011.
