Press Release: Deals Done
Simon & Schuster UK To Publish Book On The Miliband Brothers

Posted at 7:18AM Wednesday 01 Sep 2010

Editorial Director Mike Jones at Simon & Schuster UK is delighted to announce the acquisition of a major new biography, provisionally titled, Miliband, by Lance Price and Allegra Stratton. S&S acquired UK & Commonwealth rights from agent Broo Docherty.

Lance Price has witnessed the battle between Downing Street and the media from both sides. He was a BBC political correspondent for many years before working inside Number 10 as a media adviser to Tony Blair. He is now a writer and political commentator. His first book, The Spin Doctor's Diary, was published in 2005 and Simon & Schuster published Where Power Lies: Prime Ministers vs The Media in February 2010, which The Sunday Times described as 'an enthralling history of the relationship between prime ministers and the press barons'.

Lance said: 'The Milibands make for a fascinating story. From their parents' escape from the Nazis in wartime Belgium to David and Ed's careers at the heart of New Labour. Inevitably the leadership election has created tensions, whatever they may say in public. But theirs is also a story about the modern Labour party and in particular how much it must compromise, or adjust its agenda to win power. David and Ed have very different views about that. And yet both of them are arch 'modernisers' compared to their parents' generation. So if you scratch beneath the surface of the very polished image that both brothers project there is a conflict that goes to the heart of what Labour stand's for.'

Allegra Stratton is the Guardian's political correspondent and author of Muhajababes: Meet the New Middle East published by Constable & Robinson in the UK, Dubai, US and Spain.

Allegra Stratton said:

'For me, David and Ed are the most compelling set of political brothers since the Kennedys but while the Kennedys ran in turns on their father's plan, the Miliband brothers have allowed the Labour party to chose between their different answers to the same question: How does Labour win again? That two men who grew up the same household, received the same education, new Labour training and served next to each other in cabinet, came to see the world so differently - possibly more differently than Blair and Brown before them - is one of the most intriguing, and human, questions in contemporary politics. There will be social history: the Miliband family's journey—from their dad's arrival as a 16 year old refugee to today's leadership contest and the election of the man it hopes will lead it back to power—charts the twists, turns and generational struggles of the British left. But it will also be a guide: this book will show what a Prime Minister Miliband would mean for Britain.'

Simon & Schuster UK are the publishing home of many major bestselling authors including Rhonda Byrne, author of the international phenomenon The Secret, and now her new No1 bestseller The Power. S&S UK are the publishers of books by Robin Cook, Gordon Brown, Anthony Seldon, John Kampfner, Peter Oborne and Adam Boulton among many others.
