Doubleday Acquires If I Close My Eyes Now By Brazilian Author And TV Presenter Edney Silvestre

Posted at 7:47AM Friday 20 Jan 2012

Jane Lawson, Editorial Director at Doubleday, has acquired World English rights from Tassy Barham in IF I CLOSE MY EYES NOW plus one other by Brazilian author and TV presenter Edney Silvestre.

Says Lawson, 'This tender-hearted murder mystery/coming-of-age debut novel set in the 1960s about two boys from the poor side of Rio de Janeiro who come across a dead woman's body and who take it upon themselves to find her killer reminded me so much of I'M NOT SCARED by Niccolo Amminiti that I instantly fell for it. In the tradition of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, such novels that expose racism and violence through the eyes of young children can be immensely powerful.'

Tassy Barham says, 'It is very exciting to know that Edney Silvestre, one of Brazil's finest voices, will now reach an English readership, and will be joining Doubleday's stable of prestigious international authors, under the careful and highly-respected eye of Jane Lawson.'

IF I CLOSE MY EYES NOW has been sold in six other European territories: Belfond in France; Mondadori in Italy; Planeta Manuscrito in Portugal; Limes Verlag inGermany; Evro-Giunti in Serbia and de Arbeiderspers in Holland. It is also the recipient of two prestigious literary prizes in Brazil where it is published by Record. Doubleday plan to publish in hardback in May 2013.
