Jonathan Cape are delighted to announce the acquisition of Theatre of the Gods by Matt Suddain, as the first part of a two-book deal. Against stiff competition, Dan Franklin acquired World English rights from Andrew Mills at Michelle Kass Associates. A steampunk novel of extraordinary ambition and wit, Theatre of the Gods has been compared by readers to Gulliver's Travels, THE Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the work of Jules Verne, Terry Pratchett, Thomas Pynchon and Kurt Vonnegut. Dan Franklin says: 'I spent a weekend absorbed in Theatre of the Gods, delighting in its wit, invention and sheer storytelling brilliance, then came into the office and sent one of those emails to everyone I could think of, urging them to drop everything and read it.' Matt Suddain says: 'I'm thrilled to be invited to join a list as strong as Jonathan Cape's alongside some of my great heroes. All being well this proves that ditching your comfortable life and travelling to the other side of the world to become a novelist is not necessarily a dumb idea.' Matt Suddain is a New Zealand-born writer and journalist. He has a degree in film and briefly worked as a designer and editor before starting his writing career. He left New Zealand in 2008 to travel, working as a 'journalist at large,' penning headlines for satirical newspaper The Onion, and documenting his experiences at events such as the riots in South Korea, and the Miss Universe pageant in Vietnam. He has settled in London with his wife, Sarah to concentrate on writing fiction. He compiles the webzine Beast & Field (www.suddain.com).
