Sarah Rigby Acquires The Strong Man For Hutchinson

Posted at 9:05PM Tuesday 16 Oct 2012

Senior Editor Sarah Rigby has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights excluding Canada to The Strong Man, a debut novel by Dea Brøvig, from Sophie Lambert at Tibor Jones & Associates.

The Strong Man tells the story of fifteen-year-old Else Dybdahl who in 1974 lives on Norway's harsh but beautiful southern coast with her parents, who eke out a meagre living from a small fishing boat. But that summer, when a circus arrives in the village bringing with it tales from afar and promises of exotic escape, Else's life is changed forever.

Thirty years later, Else has built a life for herself, and her daughter and grand-daughter, that withstands the village's whispers; but the return of a figure from her past forces her to confront a truth that leaves the reader with a mystery that grips until the final pages.

Dea Brovig moved to the UK from Norway at the age of 17. After graduating from Leeds University she worked in publishing for eight years, including several years as a foreign rights agent at Aitken Alexander. She left to devote her time to writing and graduated from UEA's Creative Writing MA in 2009, since when she has been working on The Strong Man. She currently divides her time between Norway, Spain and the UK.

Sarah Rigby says, 'Deeply atmospheric, The Strong Man has an emotional power that has captivated us all. Dea's writing is beautifully controlled and elegant but it also holds the threat of something darker beneath the surface: the intensity of her portrayal of the bonds of love between mothers and daughters is incredibly special.'

Sophie Lambert said that, 'I couldn't be more delighted that Dea Brøvig's stunning debut novel has found such a passionate publisher.'

The Strong Man will be published in hardback by Hutchinson in November 2013 and by Windmill in paperback the following spring.

Hutchinson is an imprint of Cornerstone Publishing, a Random House Group company.  The Random House Group is an independently managed subsidiary of Random House Inc in the US, the trade book publishing division of Bertelsmann AG, one of the world's largest and most diversified integrated media companies.
