Press Release: Deals Done
Orchard Books To Publish Lemony Snicket And Jon Klassen

Posted at 8:20PM Tuesday 15 Jan 2013

Orchard Books acquires the new picture book, The Dark, from two bestselling and critically acclaimed talents; author Lemony Snicket and artist Jon Klassen.

The deal was brokered by Kate Burns, Picture, Gift and Novelty Book Publisher for Orchard Books, with Kristin Dulaney, Associate Director, Subsidiary Rights for Little Brown Books for Young Readers - part of the Hachette Book Group USA.

With emotional insight and poetic economy, Snicket and Klassen join forces to bring to light a universal, empowering story about conquering a fear of the dark. The Dark will publish in the UK in hardback on 3rd April 2013, priced £11.99.

Kate Burns, Picture, Gift and Novelty Book Publisher, Orchard Books comments:

"I am so delighted to be welcoming Lemony Snicket and Jon Klassen to the Orchard Book's picture book list. It's a dream partnership. The Dark is an incredible book – the beauty and power of the writing is matched seamlessly by the simple yet deeply evocative art. This stellar book bears many many readings, and every reader will take away something different and new from it. For me, and this is why I love it so much, the message is simple: without the dark, there would be no light. And a little light brings warmth to the dark – which is a lovely message, both practically and metaphorically."

Lemony Snicket comments:

"When I learned that Orchard Books was to unleash the Dark onto British citizens, I assumed it was a catastrophic power failure, or a large cloud of pollutant which would menace the populace. I am sad to learn it is even worse, and that my collaboration with Jon Klassen, a terrifying story containing a flashlight, will soon be published in the United Kingdom. I can neither keep calm, nor carry on."

Megan Larkin, Publishing Director, Orchard Books comments:

"We are over the moon to be publishing this very special book by this stellar duo.  Orchard Books has a worldwide reputation for stunning and stylish picture books, and The Dark epitomizes our values.  It tackles a universal subject in a bold and simple way that children – and their grown ups – will respond to and find reassuring.  It's a perfect book."

Lemony Snicket is the awarding-winning, bestselling author of a many alarming books including All the Wrong Questions and A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Jon Klassen is the award-winning artist, bestselling creator of several picture books, including I Want My Hat Back.
