Is The Subscription Model The Optimal Business Model For The Digital Age?

Publishers shouldn't run from or forget to build for the subscription model, especially when it's proven so successful for new digital businesses. It is especially valuable now that hard goods (e.g., printed books, printed journals, record albums, CDs, and DVDs) are becoming purely digital products, making purchase more of a license than actual acquisition.
