Paperback - Blood And Thunder: How The American West Was Really Won By Hampton Sides

Posted at 6:23PM Thursday 13 Mar 2008

This book tells the story, romanticised in the novels of James Fenimore Cooper and, more recently, Cormac McCarthy, of some of the casualties of that process. The doom of the western American Indians began with white trappers seeking beaver skins. Sides summarises that in fine and lyrical prose: "As the forerunners of Western civilisation, creeping up the river valleys and across the mountain passes, the trappers brought smallpox and typhoid, they brought guns and whiskey and venereal disease, they brought the puzzlement of money and the gleam of steel.
