Children's Author Writes Latest Title In The Middle Of A Shopping Centre

Posted at 8:23PM Tuesday 29 Sep 2009

The children's writer Simon Cheshire, author of over a dozen bestsellers for 8-12 year olds, is writing his latest book in a very unusual place: the front window of Borders bookshop in the Touchwood Shopping Centre in Solihull.

Simon is writing the eighth title in his Saxby Smart series of comedy crime mysteries about a schoolboy sleuth.

Simon will be 'on display' from 9:30am-4:00pm every day from now until Friday 2nd October. He will be signing copies of his books and meeting readers at 4pm on the Friday.

Why is he writing a book in public? He says: "Partly, it's to promote the latest volume of Saxby's adventures, but it's also to get people thinking about the relationship between writers and their readers. Besides, inspiration can be found in the unlikeliest places. If any interesting shoppers pass the window, they might well find themselves woven into the story!"

The new Saxby Smart book, volume seven, is published on October 1st. The series has a unique feature - solve-it-yourself questions posed directly to the reader - and is rapidly becoming a firm favourite on both sides of the Atlantic.

Simon Cheshire lives in Warwick with his wife and two children, although he spends most of his time in a world of his own.

PRESS QUOTES ABOUT THE SAXBY SMART SERIES:

"No clues for guessing what a great read this is... Saxby is a private detective who operates out of his garden shed and, via clever first person narrative, his loyal sidekick is the reader. Talk about feeling involved in a book!"  - Liverpool Echo (of book 1)

"Simon Cheshire writes comedy mysteries better than anyone. Young readers will love this: there are thrills and humour throughout and good mental exercise as well" - Carousel magazine (of book 5)
