Give Waterstone's a chance

Posted at 8:01AM Monday 18 Jan 2010

Waterstone's isn't ideal — but it's all we've got, and if it goes, and you don't live near a struggling independent, there will be no big accessible bookshops left in the entire country. Can you imagine?

Moral of the story: cherish your independent, give Waterstone's a chance and pray that it doesn't try to compete with Amazon, because it can't. A world without bookshops is an inconceivably horrible thought; let's hope HMV Group throws its considerable resources into ensuring it doesn't happen here.
