Bookselling Debate Independents Vs. The Chains

Posted at 6:15AM Wednesday 28 Jul 2010

Is bookselling a dying art?

The Big Green Bookshop's story is one of dedication, hard work and community. Since opening in 2008, the bookshop has been overwhelmed by the local support and enthusiasm of the people of Wood Green.

Despite the steep decline in national book sales, The Big Green bookshop have created a successful business with loyal customers and, incredibly, have thrived where the other booksellers have fallen.

Can something be learnt from how The Big Green Bookshop has managed to do well in these harsh trading conditions?

Please join us for book-chat, laughs, drinks and nibbles at The Big Green Bookshop on the 4th August from 7 - 8.30pm

Speakers confirmed:

Simon Key

Simon went straight into bookselling from school and now has almost twenty years experience. Simon was part of the management team of Waterstones Oxford St. when he decided that he wanted move away from big business bookselling and move towards move locally focused business. It was here that he met Tim West, his current business partner.

In 2008 Waterstones Wood Green closed and Tim and Simon decided that opening their own bookshop was the best thing for themselves, and for the residents of Wood Green too. So now, after two years of hard work and dedication, Simon Key's The Big Green Bookshop is now an established and growing business at the heart of the local community.
